Movember and No-Shave November in Portugal

We’ve said goodbye to warmer days, and with them, the excuses for not growing out that beard.

Not only is this the season of beards and mustaches (though with us at Barba Brada, it’s beard season all year round), but is also the perfect time to put your facial hair to use. November, also known as “the hairiest month of the year”, is a time of two very important campaigns that line up perfectly: Movember and No-Shave November.

Movember is a movement that started in 1999 in Southern Australia. The goal of this movement is to spread awareness of health problems in men (such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, depression and physical inactivity) and help men live happier, healthier, and longer lives. And to this day, this movement is observed annually with “Mo Bros” all over the world. To observe this annual event, men grow out their moustache in solidarity.

No-Shave November

This is probably very well-known all over the world. The No-Shave November started in 2009. Similar to Movember, this movement started because of a cause. The thought behind it is to grow awareness about cancer by embracing our wild and rebellious beards (and not just the mustache), which cancer patients lose. It is to raise awareness about cancer prevention, education, and more.

Both campaigns have the same goal in mind, and it's to raise awareness about men's health problems. Taking part in this, you are starting an important conversation to get more men to be more proactive and take control of their lives: from medical check-ups, to healthier lifestyles, which ultimately reduce the mortality rate due to cancer. So put your razors blades aside, grow out the most epic beard ever, start a dialogue with your friends and loved ones, and join your fellow Barbudos in solidarity.

In 2018, we launched our t-shirt that represents all that was mentioned above. It's a way for us to remember to take care of ourselves, and our physical and mental health every day. At Barba Brada, this is something we strongly believe in. Every month of November, we donate 1 for each t-shirt sold to the Movember foundation. But if you’re looking into more ways to help in this cause, in Portugal for example, you can contribute directly to the Portuguese League Against Cancer or the Portuguese Prostate Patients Association.

If you participate in Movember and No-Shave November, send us the link to your donation page so we can highlight it on our blog! You can also record your video like Bruno did, and share it on our Facebook page!

Thank you for helping men live better lives, and may the Beard be with you!
