When you shave you get dry skin because you just irritated it with a razor. The exfoliation frees your skin from dead cells and prevents pores from becoming clogged.
This way, you expose healthy skin, and your beard oil will penetrate your skin and shave better. Furthermore, by exfoliating you are preventing ingrown hairs. In general, exfoliation contributes to a better growth of the beard if you are starting from scratch.
The best thing about all this is that you don't have to go and buy an expensive exfoliator. If you're lucky enough to have someone at home who has one, then borrow it!
Otherwise, you can make your own with items you find in the house. This is the one I used personally during my first days of beard growth.
You only need three ingredients:
- 1 and a half tablespoons of olive oil
- 1 and a half tablespoons of coffee (fresh works best, but dry used grounds will work, too)
- 1 tablespoon honey
Mix them all in a bowl until a homogeneous paste is formed. Then apply to face and beard in light circular movements. Let it act for 5 minutes, and remove with warm water.
Voilà! Your skin is now refreshed and healthy, and your beard can begin to grow freely.
